CCD project - 2000 June 23

Peter Gruber and I went to Savage and imaged from around 9:30 until 2:00, when the clouds arrived. This was the first night out with the Project using battery power, away from Crockett. The LX200 behaved well and we had a lot of fun.

The color images below are by Peter, who added the color during processing. I don't have a color filter wheel to take true color images, but these are quite attractive.

M16 M16, the Eagle nebula in Sagittarius. 60 second exposure. We would have liked to go longer, but the bright stars were saturating the chip. Click on the image at left for the full size 146kb .jpg file, which shows more luscious detail in the "Pillars of Creation" at the center, made famous by the beautiful Hubble image.
M8 M8, the Lagoon Nebula in Sagittarius. 30 second exposure.
M20 M20, the Trifid Nebula in Sagittarius. 30 second exposure.
M17 M17, the Omega or Swan Nebula in Sagittarius. 60 second exposure.
M101 M101, galaxy in Ursa Major. 10 minute exposure.
M51 M51, the Whirlpool Galaxy in Ursa Major. 20 stacked 30-second exposures, total integration time of 10 minutes.
NGC 6822 NGC 6822, large edge-on galaxy in Sagittarius. 3 minute exposure.
Hickson 63 Hickson 63, a group of five galaxies in Canes Venatici ranging from magnitude 11 to 13.6. Note the barred spiral at bottom left. 60 second exposure. Thanks John Nusbaum for turning me on to this group!
M22 M22, globular cluster in Sagittarius. 60 second exposure.
M28 M28, globular cluster in Sagittarius. 60 second exposure.
M4 M4, globular cluster in Scorpius. 10 second exposure.
M80 M80, globular cluster in Scorpius. 60 second exposure.
pluto This 10 second image barely caught Pluto at the far left edge of the image, about halfway down.
M7 M7, open cluster in Scorpius. 5 second exposure.
M11 M11, open cluster in Scutum. 10 second exposure.
