CCD project - 2001 October 20, with Kevin O'Neill
Kevin and I met at Savage on a beautiful evening that was clear, but with a
fair amount of high moisture that limited transparency a bit. We mostly
revisited some old favorites. Kevin had to leave early to attend to family
matters, but I stayed and tried out a new technique for making "pretty
pictures". At least, it was new for me. The technique involves combining
stacked images AFTER they have been flat fielded, as opposed to stacking the
images before applying a single flat field image. The change is related to my
recent acquisition of CCDSoft camera control software, which replaces CCDOps.
I was surprised at how much less noisy the final images were.
I also spent quite a bit of time hunting down asteroid 27234 1999 RC2. I
managed to capture this mag 17.8 asteroid traveling through Lyra. If I can
figure out how to animate the images, I'll post them here so you can see a rock
fly.
