When To Observe

  • Now!
  • When it is near the Meridian (highest point in the southern sky)

  • I prefer before opposition so scope has time to cool

Observe with what?

  • Almost any telescope with good optics
  • As small as 4-inches, as large as you can get your hands on
  • Good eyepieces and a barlow
  • Color filters (experience recommended)
  • Scope has to be temperature equalized. Best for at least a couple of hours

Observing Sites

  • Almost anywhere with a good southern horizon
  • Light pollution doesn’t matter!
  • Backyards/balconies work fine
  • Security is important since you need to leave scope out to cool off
