This year’s Perseid shower occurs in dark, dark skies — just 3 days after the new moon. No doubt the best meteor shower event to stay up for in 2010. At the peak on August 12th, you can expect 100 meteors per hour.

Just after sunset, look to the west to see a slivered crescent moon adjacent to Venus, Mars and Saturn. Pretty!

The date (in the northern hemisphere) when night and day are nearly of the same length and Sun crosses the celestial equator (i.e., declination 0) moving southward (in the northern hemisphere).
