Alex Gorbachev presents: One Rig to Image Them All: Field and Remote Setup for Planetary and Deep-Sky Astrophotography

NOVAC member Alex Gorbachev will explain how you can image planets and deep-sky objects with a single rig and a unified setup. In this talk, he will take you through a multi-year journey that led to the development of two versatile imaging systems capable of operating both in the field and remotely, supporting high-resolution planetary imaging as well as deep-sky astrophotography.

His goal is to encourage experimentation. He will share what worked, what did not, and the lessons learned along the way. This presentation offers practical ideas and proven solutions that may help you refine your own setup and push further in this challenging and rewarding hobby.

Biography:

Alex worked on solar adaptive optics in a physics lab in the 1980s before transitioning to an IT career in the 1990s. In 2013 he bought his first telescope, sparking a lifelong passion for astroimaging and visual observing. Alex is active in deep-sky, planetary, and solar imaging, and volunteers with NOVAC’s Almost Heaven Star Party and the Smithsonian Institution’s public outreach programs. Professionally, he owns a company that designs open-source data and software solutions. Alex lives with his family in a Bortle 7 suburb of Washington, D.C. His other hobbies include coffee roasting and extraction, 3D printing, machining, and cooking.
