Join NOVAC as we welcome Dr. Kate Russo, eclipse chaser, astronomy enthusiast, and by profession, noted psychologist. Embark on an interesting exploration of the human psyche with Kate, founder of Being in the Shadow. With 25 years dedicated to eclipse chasing, encompassing 13 total eclipses and 3 annular eclipses, Kate brings forth a wealth of experience and narratives encapsulating the ineffable aspects of totality—awe, fear, euphoria, and connectedness. Kate introduces her latest research endeavor, Project Awe, aimed at capturing the sublime aspects of totality through changes in brainwave activity. Preliminary pilot project findings from the recent Annular Solar Eclipse observed in Uvalde County, Texas, will be shared.
Dr. Russo will join us virtually from her home in Australia. The public is free to attend as well. Here is information you’ll need to participate. Hope to see you soon!

Talk Title: Being in the Shadow
Abstract:
Below is an excerpt from Kate’s book, “Being in the Shadow, Stories of the First-Time Total Eclipse Experience“, Dr. Kate Russo, 2017.
“Being in the Shadow describes what it is like to experience one of nature’s most spectacular events, using personal stories from people just like you. By being in the right place at the right time, these individuals shuddered with fear and anticipation as the light dimmed, the temperatures dropped, and their world plunged into an eerie darkness. They gazed in awe at the eclipsed Sun, feeling a sense of connection and unexpectedly gaining new life insights.”
Biography:
Dr. Kate Russo is a psychologist and eclipse chaser who has been chasing eclipses around the world for nearly 20 years. She researches the totality experience and is an expert on the community eclipse planning.
